"All My Life: The Best of Karla Bonoff," a remastered collection spanning her entire career, appeared in 1999. In 1990, three more Bonoff compositions appeared on another Ronstadt album, "Cry Like a Rainstorm, Howl Like the Wind," and in 1993, another song, "Tell Me Why," became a hit for Wynonna Judd, with Bonoff on acoustic guitar and Bryndle members singing backup vocals. Subsequent albums such as "Restless Nights" (1979) and "Wild Heart of the Young" (1982) featured the talents of Joe Walsh, Don Henley, Peter Frampton, J.D. She merely slowed down, always surrounded by friends. It's been a long time between then and this weekend's Barns of Wolf Trap appearance, but Bonoff never stopped.
Weldman recorded as a solo act, Edwards and Gold joined Ronstadt's band, and that soon-to-be-superstar singer recorded three Bonoff songs - "Someone to Lay Down Beside Me," "If He's Ever Near" and "Lose Again" - on her hit 1976 album, "Hasten Down the Wind." The next year, Bonoff signed as a solo artist with Columbia Records, where she recorded those three songs, the hit single "I Can't Hold On" and "Home" (later recorded by Bonnie Raitt) on a fine self-titled debut produced by Edwards. Lou Adler, producer of the Mamas and the Papas, tried to create a Bryndle hit single, but the band broke up before reaching any commercial success. Bryndle made one album for A&M, but the label was confused, in those days before a gender-integrated Fleetwood Mac, about how to sell a quartet of two guys and two gals.
But in 1970, the combination of four talented songwriters of the period - Karla Bonoff, Kenny Edwards (who was in the Stone Poneys with Linda Ronstadt), Wendy Waldman and Andrew Gold - seemed like a sure thing. Okay, that last one didn't quite make it. The Southern California-based singer-songwriter scene that began as the '60s became the '70s - with such artists as Joni Mitchell and Jackson Browne, among others - also spawned some brilliant songwriter bands, including Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, the Eagles, Poco, Bryndle.
